A tribute to Sir Percy - who retires from covering duties

Cast your mind back to the spring and summer of 2006. In many ways not much was different then to now. Aidan O’Brien had won the 2,000 Guineas with George Washington (Ire) (Danehill) and the Oaks with Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells).
It was the year in which Galileo (Ire) first came to prominence as a sire when his first-crop daughter Nightime (Ire) won the Irish 1,000 Guineas and his sons, led by Sixties Icon (GB), filled the first three places in the St Leger, though remarkably none of this quartet was trained at Ballydoyle.
But it was also a season in which some notable blows were landed for the smaller operators: Pam Sly and Micky Fenton won the 1,000 Guineas with Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), a breakthrough Classic success not just for trainer and jockey, but also for the breeze-up sector, with the filly having been purchased by Sly for £30,000....

DEEPONE is the first Stakes performer for STUDY OF MAN
Having won his first two races in some style DEEPONE stepped up to Listed company in the Listed Churchill Stakes where he duly finished second beaten three quarters of a length, but there was a few mitigating factors, the main one being the slow pace out in front which caused him to be quite keen in the early stages. He briefly looked like he was coming with a winning challenge before it flattened out. He remains promising and he'll be suited by a stronger gallop.

A third winner for STUDY OF MAN
Third generation Lanwades-bred, JUBILEE WALK,  became STUDY OF MAN's third individual winner when he edged a bobbing finish to make it third time lucky over six furlongs at Salisbury. There was plenty to like about his attitude.  JUBILEE WALK is the seventh winner for his dam STARLIT SANDS, herself a Group winner at 2.

8th August 2023
A Second winner for STUDY OF MAN

Fourth generation Lanwades-bred FRANCOPHONE leads all the way to win a novice race at Ayr over 7f on debut. FRANCOPHONE was able to dictate throughout, but still impressed with the way she drew clear of the more experienced runner-up inside the final furlong. This was the second debutant winner for her sire STUDY OF MAN after DEEPONE scored first out time on 19th May at Leopardstown before winning again on his second start this time at Killarney on 19th July. FRANCOPHONE is a half-sister to winner STAR OF MAYO who is by another Lanwades stallion BOBBY’S KITTEN. These are first two foals for their dam, FRANCOPHILIA, who won two races at four. She has a yearling filly also by STUDY OF MAN which has already been named SUITE FRANCAISE. FRANCOPHILIA herself is out of the Group 1 winning mare LADY JANE DIGBY, winner of seven races and also the dam of seven winners.

An historic day for SEA THE MOON as he sires the 1-2-3 in the Gr.1 German Oaks
SEA THE MOON who was already the sire of the Gr.1 German Derby winner this year, FANTASTIC MOON, managed to pull off the double when his three-year-old daughter MUSKOKA triumphed in the Gr.1 German Oaks with SEA THE MOON’s other two runners KASSADA and SEA THE LADY finishing second and third respectively. MUSKOKA settled in midfield on the inner, took closer order after halfway before battling on gamely to lead close home and win the race by a neck from the front running KASSADA with SEA THE LADY two and a quarter lengths back in third. MUSKOKA has never been out of the first two. She was second on her debut last year before winning her maiden at Munich and she was second again on her seasonal reappearance. Since then she has won the Listed Henkel-Stutenpreis, Gr.3 Brummerhofer Stuten-Meile and is now a Classic winner. Many congratulations to all her connections; her owner Stall Golden Goal, her breeder Frau A & L W Baumgarten and trainer Henk Grewe.

TBA British Breeder of the Year Award
For the second year running, Kirsten Rausing been awarded the TBA’s Silver Rose Bowl, BRITISH BREEDER OF THE YEAR. This follows on the back of her receiving the ‘CARTIER AWARD OF MERIT’ at the Cartier Racing Awards in London last November.

2022 was an outstanding year for Kirsten Rausing with 4th generation Lanwades-bred mare, ALPINISTA, becoming heroine of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and crowned 2022 World Champion. Unbeaten in 2021 and 2022, ALPINISTA accumulated 10 wins, 9 Stakes wins, and a phenomenal 6 consecutive Group 1 wins. Happily, she retired to stud in the autumn of last year and we await with great anticipation her 2024 foal!

ALPINISTA however, was not the only Lanwades-bred to shine brightly at the highest level in 2022. ELDAR ELDAROV (another 4th generation, who shares the same granddam in 'ALBANOVA' as ALPINISTA) was victorious in the world's oldest Classic race, the Group 1 St Leger (first run in 1776).

Group 1 wins in 2022 were not just confined to Northern Hemisphere shores, with Australia also experiencing the significant Lanwades-bred factor in DURSTON (by Lanwades stallion SEA THE MOON and out of a Lanwades-bred mare CARIBANA, who is by the late Lanwades stallion HERNANDO), winning the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup, beating subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip. Likewise in Australia, ZAAKI (by the late Lanwades stallion LEROIDESANIMAUX and out of Lanwades-bred KESARA) winning yet another Group 1, in the 2022 Champion Stakes, making this his 4th Group 1 win (totalling an astonishing 11 Group wins, a further 11 Group places, and earning over Aus$10 million, becoming Australia’s highest earning import)..

In the photograph from left to right receiving the trophy on behalf of Kirsten Rausing is Andrew Deery (Broodmare Manager at Lanwades Stud), Richard King (Broodmare Manager at St Simon Stud) and presenting the trophy is James Crowhurst (Chairman of TBA Veterinary Committee)

Two from two for son of STUDY OF MAN
DEEPONE, 2 year old colt by STUDY OF MAN, made it two wins from two runs in good style when winning the Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race at Killarney today on yielding ground over a mile. This win followed on from his debut win at Leopardstown back in May. He was fresh and keen to make the running which was probably not ideal, but it was okay in this company and the way he picked up and lengthened to show that he got the mile well was the most pleasing aspect. He will step up in grade now and has options. His trainer, Paddy Twomey, reported
“he was well in himself and we wanted to educate him today. He ran from the front today having come from further back last time. He would have been better with a lead today. Hopefully he's a nice horse and I think he will stay”.

A GROUP 1 CLASSIC WINNER FOR SEA THE MOON
SEA THE MOON is now a Classic sire after his son FANTASTIC MOON won the Gr.1 German Derby at Hamburg – just like his sire had done 9 years ago!  FANTASIC MOON followed up an impressive victory in the Gr.3 Derby Trial at Baden-Baden back in May with a fantastic performance to land the Gr.1 German Derby.  FANTASIC MOON was given time to settle and raced towards the rear of the field before coming with a blistering run that saw him beat off his rivals to win by two and a quarter lengths.  Bred by Graf and Gräfin von Stauffenberg, he was sold by them for €49,000 at the BBAG September Yearling Sale.  FANTASTIC MOON was already one of his sire’s 15 individual Group winners, having won the prestigious German two-year-old race, the Preis des Winterfavoriten, but now becomes one of three to have succeeded at the very highest level, along with Coronation Stakes winner ALPINE STAR and Lanwades-bred DURSTON from last year’s Caulfield Cup.  Many congratulations to all the connections: the Owners “Liberty Racing 2021” with Manager Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten, Trainer Sarah Steinberg, Jockey Rene Piechulek, Racing-Manager Wilhelm “Kojak” Feldmann and Breeder Graf und Gräfin Stauffenberg.

TWO GROUP WINNERS IN A DAY AT HAMBURG FOR SEA THE MOON
Three-year-old filly MOSKOKA started a memorable day for SEA THE MOON when winning the Gr.3 Stute Meile over 1600 metres at Hamburg before FANASTIC MOON’s fantastic victory in the Gr.1 German Derby. Trained by Henk Grewe, MOSKOKA was settled in rear and had to weave her way through horses before stretching clear to earn a comfortable two-length win. This was a first Group victory for the filly, who won the Listed Henkel-Stutenpreis over 1600 metres at Düsseldorf by half a length back in May. She broke her maiden over the same distance at Munich last October on her second run. She was sold as yearling at the BBAG Yearling Sales for €80,000 having been bred by Antje and Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten. KASSADA, another three-year-old daughter of SEA THE MOON, nearly made it three Group wins on the day for SEA THE MOON when she was narrowly beaten into second in the Gr.3 Hamburger Stutenpreis by PRINCESS ZELDA

ANOTHER GROUP WINNER FOR SEA THE MOON
Three-year-old filly SELENAIA won her first Group race when sprinting clear in the Gr.3 Honeymoon Stakes over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita at the weekend. Bred in Ireland by Derek Iceton of Tara Stud, SELENAIA by SEA THE MOON was running in her first Stakes race. Trained by Jonathan Thomas, SELENAIA pulled clear to win impressively by three and a quarter lengths. SELENAIA has now run four times and has won three of them, winning at two at Meadowlands and at three at Indiana Grand. Her only defeat so far came on debut last September at Saratoga. She was consigned by Tara Stud when sold as a foal at the December December Sales where she was purchased by Avenue Bloodstock for 33,000gns. She then returned to Tattersalls the following year and was purchased by her current owners at the October Sales Yearlings Book 2 for 85,000 gns.

Another Classic Trial Winner for SEA THE MOON
SEA THE MOON’s daughter KASSADA was an impressive winner of the Gr.3 Diana Trial at Hoppegarten on Sunday.  Although racing keenly, she made virtually all the running and won by five lengths for trainer Markus Klug. SEA THE MOON is now sire of the favourite for the Gr.1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) with KASSADA as well as sire of the favourite for the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby (German Derby) with FANTASTIC MOON, both races due to run in August. KASSADA was unsold for €140,000 at the BBAG September Yearling Sale and therefore remains in the ownership of her breeder Gestut Rottgen. KASSADA ran three times at two finishing third on her first two starts before winning her maiden at Munich in November.  She was sent out for her first run at three in April where she duly won by four lengths at Dusseldorf. SEA THE MOON is also sire of Irish-bred WESTMINSTER MOON who is currently favourite for this year’s Polish Derby having won twice already this year.

A 1-2 for sons of SEA THE MOON in Derby Trial
FANTASTIC MOON, three-year-old son of SEA THE MOON, was an impressive winner of the Gr.3 Derby Trial at Baden-Baden yesterday. It was a 1-2 in the race for Lanwades Stud’s Sea The Moon with his other son VINTAGE MOON coming in second. FANTASTIC MOON, owned by Liberty Racing 2021, raced prominently in the 2000m contest before easing into the lead and soon drew clear of the field to win easily by four and a half lengths from the Gestüt Auenquelle homebred VINTAGE MOON. Bred by Graf & Grafin von Stauffenberg and sold at the BBAG yearling sales for €49,000 FANTASTIC MOON won the Gr.3 Preis des Winterfavoriten last year at two and now heads for the Gr.1 German Derby in July as does VINTAGE MOON. A race that their sire won by record breaking 11 lengths in 2014

First winner for STUDY OF MAN
STUDY OF MAN, Lanwades Stud’s Classic-winning son of DEEP IMPACT, celebrated his first winner from just his second runner yesterday, when DEEPONE justified favouritism to win the 7½f EBF Maiden at Leopardstown on debut. Trained by Paddy Twomey, the colt showed a smart turn of foot winning by two and a half lengths. Racing Post reported in the analysis “He should have a bright future”. DEEPONE was bred by Andreas Bezzola and is out of the unraced GALILEO mare AVYANNA. He was sold from Barton Stud to Castle Bloodstock for 31,000 gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale before making 62,000 gns to trainer Paddy Twomey from Beechvale Stud at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 3. STUDY OF MAN, is a Niarchos-bred son of the great DEEP IMPACT out of SECOND HAPPINESS, a daughter of the phenomenal MIESQUE and a half-sister to French Classic winners KINGMAMBO and EAST OF THE MOON. A great start at stud for the Prix du Jockey Club winner who retired to Lanwades Stud for the 2020 season.  Please click below the watch DEEPONE winning...

Group 2 success for son of SEA THE MOON

ASSISTENT, the now four-year-old son of SEA THE MOON, easily won the Gr.2 Carl Jaspers Preis over 2400m (12f) at Cologne on Sunday, earning a first victory in Group company. He was patiently ridden, and when asked to challenge he duly went to the front beating the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Bayern victor TUNNES, a half-brother to the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero TORQUATOR TASSO, by three and a quarter lengths. ASSISTENT had previously won the Listed Preis der Fortuna at Dusseldorf last month for his trainer, Henk Grewe as well as the Listed Grosser Preis von Meravis at Hannover at 3 last year and was placed 4th in the Gr.1 German Derby.
