ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE WINNER ON DEBUT FOR ARCHIPENKO
Hot on the heels of MADAME CHIANG came another impressive winning debut this time for a colt by ARCHIPENKO. Owned and trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, the two-year-old colt FARQUHAR made a most impressive debut over 8 ½ furlongs at Nottingham on 30th October. He tracked the leaders and when asked to quicken by his jockey he showed a very good turn of foot to draw clear and win comfortably by 3 ½ lengths. He's bred to stay, being by a son of English Derby winner SIR PERCY, and he's ticking all the boxes at the moment. A GAME PERFORMANCE BY SCINTILLULA TO WIN GROUP 3 AT LEOPARDSTOWN
SCINTILLULA owned by Kirsten Rausing and Jackie Bolger put up an extremely game performance to win the Gr.3 Meld Stakes at Leopardstown by nearly three lengths. It was a brave decision by her trainer Jim Bolger and connections to let SCINTILLULA take her chance in this race after running a big race in the previous Saturday’s Irish Oaks where she was only beaten a length to finish fourth. This time round SCINTILLULA set out to make all the running and although the subsequent runner up, MARS, came to challenge she was really game and resolute in the end to win this race over nine furlongs. SCINTILLULA was runner-up to subsequent Classic winner SKY LANTERN as a two-year-old in the Gr.1 Moyglare Stakes, she lost her maiden tag on her second run this year at Leopardstown before finishing second in a Listed race at The Curragh at the end of June. Lanwades homebred filly ALUMNA followed up her earlier impressive win on debut in March with an equally impressive win in the Prix de la Madeleine at Longchamp yesterday. ALUMNA was settled off the pace in midfield and turning into the straight she showed a lovely turn of foot to win unchallenged by two lengths to make it two wins from two starts. Trained in France for Kirsten Rausing by Andre Fabre, ALUMNA is the first foal of Lanwades-bred Listed winner ALMA MATER who is by SADLER’S WELLS and is a half sister to dual Gr.1 Champion Stakes winner ALBORADA and triple German Gr.1 winner ALBANOVA. ALMA MATER has a two-year-old colt ALZAMMAAR sold by Staffordstown at Tattersalls October Sales last year for 170,000 gns, purchased by Shadwell Estate Company and in training with Charlie Hills in Lambourn as well as a lovely yearling colt by BLAME which will be sold later in the year by Staffordstown.

SIR PERCY’S SON MIRSAALE WINS THE INVESTEC DERBY TRIAL
MIRSAALE, a son of Lanwades sire SIR PERCY, won the Investec Derby Trial at Epsom yesterday and will try and emulate his father by winning the Epsom Derby. By winning the race yesterday he automatically gets a wildcard entry into the Derby to be run on 1st June this year, but connections had already paid an entry fee to add him to the race just a couple of weeks ago. MIRSAALE was bred by Mr and Mrs Pakenham (in whose colours SIR PERCY won the 2006 Epsom Derby) and was sold at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales Book 1 to Rabbah Bloodstock for 50,000 gns. Owned by Saif Ali and trained in Newmarket by James Tate who is in only his third season as a trainer, MIRSAALE won a Brighton maiden over 7 furlongs as a two-year-old before finishing third in the Listed Ascendant Stakes at Haydock, he ended the year finishing seventh to Lanwades-bred GHURAIR in the valuable Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy at Newmarket. MIRSAALE is likely to run in another of the trials and his young handler said “He’ll be my first Classic runner and I’m looking forward to it already”.

APRIL IS ARCHIPENKO MONTH
Six foals by our first season (two-year-olds of 2013) horse ARCHIPENKO have arrived over the past couple of weeks, five of them colts, and three of the six are out of daughters of 2004 Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE.
Star on paper and a very nice type is a grey colt out of three-time Group 1 winner and German Horse of the Year ALBANOVA, three of whose first four foals are winners, including multiple stakes placed three-year-old of 2012 ALBAMARA. ALBANOVA, who has a three-year-old filly, last year’s winner ALWILDA (by Hernando) with Sir Mark Prescott, a two-year-old filly, ALL AT SEA by SEA THE STARS, in training with Andre Fabre and a yearling filly by OASIS DREAM which realised 450,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale, now visits FRANKEL.
ALBA STELLA, whose four foals of racing age are all winners, has a grey half-brother to that quartet and to her HERNANDO two-year-old (MOSCATO, in training with Sir Mark Prescott) and yearling colt also by HERNANDO. She will again be covered by ARCHIPENKO. ALAKANANDA, with an even better record of five winners from her five runners, including Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER, has a bay half-brother to them and full-brother to last year's filly. She visits NAYEF.
The other two colts, both chesnut, are out of RYELLA (a COZZENE half-sister to two North American Stakes winners and whose son, RALLY AGAIN is a Group 1 placed horse in Russia) and NADESZHDA, a four-time winner and Grade 2 placed in California, dam of two winners already, and a great-great-granddaughter of SPECIAL, who is also grandam of ARCHIPENKO.
Sole ARCHIPENKO filly is a bay out of MARIA WALESKA's dual winning SELKIRK grand-daughter MARIA DI SCOZIA, a full-sister to the mare's first foal, now two-year-old colt who is in training with Patrick Chamings. NADESZHDA will now visit AUSSIE RULES whilst MARIA DI SCOZIA visits BORN TO SEA. RYELLA stays at Lanwades and will go to SIR PERCY.

A GOOD WINNER IN HONG KONG FOR AUSSIE RULES
AUSSIE RULES looks to have an exciting prospect racing in Hong Kong this year. WILLIE CAZALS, a now five-year-old, raced in Italy in the name of CAZALS and was the winner of two Listed races as well as being 2nd in the Gr.2 Italian Derby. He was then sold to race in Hong Kong with the intention of running in the 2012 Hong Kong, but this was missed due to injury. He has now repaid the patience of his new owners by winning the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Cup at Happy Valley. His now trainer, Tony Cruz, reported “he is definitely a Group horse” and his next target is possibly the Group 3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup on 5th May and then hopefully onto a Group 1 event later in the month.

THE LANWADES STUD SPONSORED GR.3 NELL GWYN STAKES WON IN FINE STYLE
The Gr.3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket yesterday was won in fine style by HOT SNAP and is now the new favourite for the 1,000 guineas to be run in just over two weeks time. Owned and bred by Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms and trained by Sir Henry Cecil this filly by PIVOTAL had previously won a thirteen runner maiden at Kempton. Although early in the race she did show signs of greenness once she was switched to the rail she began to get the hang of things and quickened up nicely to beat Gr.1 Moyglare Stakes winner SKY LANTERN by 2 ¼ lengths.

FOALS GALORE
Colt foals for half-sisters SONGERIE and SOFT MORNING born on the same day are among the stars in a slew of new arrivals.
SOFT MORNING, whose first foal is the 2012 stakes placed two-year-old winner SAVANNA LA MAR, has a chesnut colt (her first following three fillies) by EXCEED AND EXCEL. She also has a SMART STRIKE filly, SO IN LOVE, with Andre Fabre in France to run for her this year and also a yearling filly by SONGERIE's sire HERNANDO, and stays at home to be covered by ARCHIPENKO. SONGERIE's colt is by SOFT MORNING’s sire PIVOTAL; her first foal was a dual winner last year, she has an ARCH yearling filly, and now visits HENRYTHENAVIGATOR.
Three descendants of ALRUCCABA foaled within days, all of the produce are fillies. ALRUCCABA's Group 3 winning daughter ALLELUIA, bred and raced in partnership with Sonia Rogers and dam already of a Group 1 winner in ALLEGRETTO, has a bay daughter by CAPE CROSS, born in Ireland at Airlie Stud, where she remains to visit LAWMAN. Two of World Champion ALBORADA's daughters have themselves each had daughters, and both of them are by SIR PERCY, sire of last year's Group winner ALLA SPERANZA from this family. HERNANDO's daughter ALMAMIA, whose first two filly foals are both in training in Newmarket (ALOHA, by WITH APPROVAL, three-year-old with Roger Varian, ALPHABETIQUE, by ZAMINDAR, two-year-old with Peter Chapple Hyam) and who has a yearling colt by SELKIRK, will visit NEW APPROACH this year. Unraced ALTRUISTE, now in the ownership of the British Bloodstock Agency and Lanwades, has a grey daughter and will be covered by MEDICEAN.
Another British Bloodstock Agency-owned mare, Listed-placed winner FLORA TREVELYAN, has a filly, in her case a CANFORD CLIFFS second foal (following a GALILEO daughter which brought 230,000 guineas at last December's Tattersalls Foal Sale) and is another Lanwades-based mare going to HENRYTHENAVIGATOR this year.
GRAIN ONLY, whose first two foals are the good 2012 winners CARAVAN ROLLS ON (Timeform Rated 104) and GABRIAL'S STAR (Timeform Rated 90) has an AUSSIE RULES bay colt. She could have a big 2013 as a producer, with the once-raced three-year-old GRANULE (by HERNANDO) and a two-year-old WITH APPROVAL colt, NOBLE METAL,to represent her as well. She will travel to Ireland to visit HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR.
And finally two mares who are staying put to visit AUSSIE RULES this year have both produced colts by ARCHIPENKO and for both he is a fifth foal. CARIBANA, who first produce is the Listed-winning SELKIRK filly CUBANITA, has a two-year-old full-sister to that filly named CATADUPA in training with Roger Charlton and a yearling filly by ARCHIPENKO. IN THE PINK, whose first two foals are both winners, also has consecutive foals by Lanwades' KINGMAMBO horse, as her yearling is a colt by ARCHIPENKO.

Her two winners to date, HAIL CAESAR and ALBASPINA, have respective Timeform marks of 104 and 90, with the former, a son of MONTJEU, being particularly unlucky in that three times he finished fourth in Irish Group races in his role as a Ballydoyle pacemaker. His dam now goes to another SADLER'S WELLS line horse in GALILEO's son NATHANIEL.
AKDARENA, whose first foal is a now yearling colt by GALILEO, has second foal a filly by SEA THE STARS. The Group winning great-granddaughter of Arc winner and European Champion three-year-old filly AKIYDA will visit PIVOTAL this year.

LANWADES & STAFFORDSTOWN TO SPONSER BLANDFORD STAKES IN 2013
Lanwades and Staffordstown Studs have agreed to increase their partnership with the Curragh Racecourse by adding their names to the Blandford Stakes taking place on Saturday, 14th September 2013. The Gr.2 contest, which is named to honour one of the great sires of the 20th century, is one of the most prestigious and valuable races for fillies and mares over ten furlongs in Europe, with previous notable winners including Chinese White (Dalakhani), Red Bloom (Selkirk), Irresistible Jewel (Danehill) and Chorist (Pivotal), while the Aidan O’Brien-trained Up (Galileo) landed the race last year. “We are pleased to be able to support Irish racing in this way,” said Kirsten Rausing, owner of Lanwades and Staffordstown Studs. “I have been part of the Irish racing scene for more than 40 years now, both as a breeder[Fame And Glory, Irish Derby winner; Alborada, Pretty Polly Stakes winner, and many others], sales consignor [four Goffs Orby sales-toppers to date] and, in a small way, owner. Naturally, I enjoy not only the tremendous horsemanship and expertise in the Irish bloodstock industry, but also the craic that goes with it!” The sponsorship package also includes continued support of the Staffordstown Stud Stakes, which takes place as one of the feature races at the Curragh’s final race day of the season on 13th October. The race was won by the Patrick Prendergast-trained Seolan (Alhaarth) in 2012.
Established as one of the leading stud farms in Europe, Lanwades Stud is owned by Kirsten Rausing and is home to leading stallions Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy (Mark Of Esteem), Aussie Rules (Danehill) and Gr.1 winner Archipenko (Kingmambo), while Staffordstown Stud in County Meath has been responsible for rearing top-class performers, including Alborada (Alzao), Albanova (Alzao) and Lady Jane Digby (Oasis Dream). Evan Arkwright, Commercial Manager of the Curragh Racecourse, commented: “We are extremely grateful to Kirsten Rausing for her very generous support of the racecourse through the sponsorship of two of our most significant races for fillies and mares. It is very appropriate that a race of the calibre and international profile of the Blandford Stakes should now be associated with one of the leading thoroughbred breeding establishments in Europe.”

HERNANDO, 1990-2013
Twenty-three year old dual Group One and French Derby winner HERNANDO has died from a heart attack at Lanwades Stud, where he spent his entire very successful stud career.
Conceived at Lanwades, HERNANDO was by NINISKI, who, contrary to many observer’s expectations, turned out to be the great NIJINSKY’s best stallion son, being Champion First Season Sire in 1984, Leading British-based Sire (Worldwide), 1991 – 93 and siring the winners of well over 1,000 races, including 10 individual Group One winners.
HERNANDO, bred and raced by the Niarchos Family, was trained as a 2- to 4- year-old by the late Francois Boutin, and after the latter’s death, as a 5-year-old by John Hammond.
HERNANDO won 7 of his 21 races, including the Prix Lupin (10f) and the French Derby, both Gr.1, the Gr.2 Prix Niel and the Prix Gontaut-Biron, Gr.3, twice; he was also second by a short head (to CARNEGIE) in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (for which he started favourite) as well as in the Irish Derby and the Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park. His winnings when retiring from racing were just short of $3 million, and he was the highest stakes-winning colt ever in Europe to that date.
Officially rated the Champion 3-year-old in France in 1993, HERNANDO went on to be the Joint Champion Older Horse in Europe and the USA in 1994.
At stud, HERNANDO surpassed all expectations, in spite of only once covering in excess of 80 mares in a breeding season; to date siring the winners of over 1,230 races and more than £21 million (€26m; $32m), including 6 individual Group 1 winners (to end 2012). HERNANDO was the leading British-based sire in Europe in 2002 and now has established sire sons of his own, most notably SULAMANI [sire of MASTERY, Italian Derby and English St Leger, also GOING SOMEWHERE (BRZ), won Gr.1 GP Carlos Pellegrini in 2012], HOLDING COURT (in Saudi Arabia) and GITANO HERNANDO (in South Africa).
HERNANDO sired two French Derby winners: HOLDING COURT and SULAMANI; also LOOK HERE (The Oaks), CASUAL CONQUEST (Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup), GITANO HERNANDO (Gr.1 Singapore International Cup; Gr.1 Goodwood Stakes), RAINBOW PEAK (Gr.1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club) and other Group winners SAMANDO, ARVADA, MR COMBUSTIBLE, ALIANTHUS, HANAMI, HERBORISTE, ATLANDO, HARRIS TWEED, AKDARENA, INDIAN DAFFODIL, SONGERIE, ASIAN HEIGHTS, JUST WONDER and TAU CETI.
To date, HERNANDO is the sire of 78 lifetime 2-year-old winners and 250 lifetime 3-year-old winners.
HERNANDO’s yearlings have made up to 400,000 guineas and in 2012, his yearling son out of OVAL OFFICE, bred by Lanwades and sold by Staffordstown, topped the Goffs Sportsman Sales when purchased by Stephen Hillen for €75,000 – he is now trained by David Simcock in Newmarket.
Now emerging also as a significant broodmare sire, HERNANDO leaves a number of daughters at stud around the world (including Group winners AKDARENA and SONGERIE at Lanwades).
“HERNANDO had been retired from his stud duties since the close of the 2011 stud season, and his final produce are now yearlings. He was a most charming character, always kind and co-operative, and he is very sadly missed by us all at Lanwades. I particularly wish to thank the horse’s owner/breeders, the Niarchos family, for entrusting him to us at Lanwades, and to his devoted handler, Steve McKeown, who has looked after HERNANDO at Lanwades for 17 years” said Kirsten Rausing, owner of Lanwades Stud.
HERNANDO has been buried next to his stud companion, Champion racehorse and sire SELKIRK, at Lanwades.

FURTHER FOALS OF 2013
Eight further foals in a week have boosted the 2013 total to 19.
LADY JANE DIGBY, Group 1 winner of seven races, has a second foal bay colt by GALILEO, her second colt after last year's chesnut by DUBAWI. A half-sister to multiple Group 3 winner GATEMAN and Royal Hunt Cup scorer SURPRISE ENCOUNTER, LADY JANE DIGBY is herself a third generation Lanwades product, being a granddaughter of MARIA WALESKA. She returns to GALILEO.
Two other Lanwades-bred winners have produced first foals. ALABELLE, a winning GALILEO half-sister to Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER, has a bay filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. As a great, great-granddaughter of ALRUCCABA, the filly is a fifth generation Lanwades product. Her dam will now visit INVINCIBLE SPIRIT’s Prix du Jockey Club winning son LAWMAN. MOTRICE, a Listed winning and multiple Group placed half-sister to seven-time Listed winner FOREIGN AFFAIRS, has a grey colt by NAYEF and will head to Ireland also, visiting SEA THE STARS.
Also among SEA THE STARS' book this year will be KESARA, a dual winner by SADLER'S WELLS who recently foaled a filly by ARCHIPENKO. The bay, her dam's third foal, is a full sister to her dam's first produce, APPARATCHIKA, a two-year-old filly in training with Mike de Kock, who did such a good job with her sire as an older horse.
Another mare with a second daughter by ARCHIPENKO is ROBE CHINOISE, whose two-year-old daughter by the horse, MADAME CHIANG, is in training with David Simcock. The pair are sisters to the multiple winning SELKIRK brothers MANNLICHEN and ORIENTAL SCOT out of Timeform 103 rated ROBE CHINOISE, whose own dam KILINISKI was fourth in the Oaks after winning the Lingfield Oaks Trial and started favourite for the 1985 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
EMINENCIA, who also has a two-year-old daughter by ARCHIPENKO (ARCHDUCHESS, trained by Rae Guest, as was MY EMMA) to run for her this year, has a bay filly in 2013 by MAKFI. Unraced EMINENCIA, a daughter herself of Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille winner MY EMMA, also has a three-year-old daughter, JAN JEFFER (by TAMAYUZ) to run for her this year, as well as a yearling colt by ARCHIPENKO.
The two other arrivals are fillies out of black-type boarders MISS CORNICHE and MISS ANABAA. The former has a chesnut by GALILEO, her eighth foal and a half-sister to four winners including multiple Stakes placed Ebor Handicap winner MOYENNE CORNICHE. Mr John Pearce-owned and bred MISS CORNICHE, a Listed winner by HERNANDO, now goes to OASIS DREAM. Chris Mills' Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner MISS ANABAA also homebred by the Mills at Lanwades, has a bay daughter by EQUIANO. The filly is half-sister to two winners including promising Timeform 93 rated 2012 3yo winner - in the colours of her breeder - MILIIKA.

FIRST FOALS OF 2013
A slew of recent arrivals have reminded us that the 2013 season is very much upon us.
One of the early stars is a bay filly by SEA THE STARS out of ALTA MODA. The fourth foal of her dam, an unraced daughter of SADLER'S WELLS and World Champion filly ALBORADA, the filly is half-sister to GHURAIR, winner of the Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy at two last year. ALTA MODA, whose third produce is a yearling colt by ARCHIPENKO, now visits INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.
Coincidentally, ALTA MODA’s close relative ALMIRANTA (by GALILEO ex ALBORADA’s stakes winning daughter ALVARITA), who is also amongst the early foalers, has a yearling filly first foal by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT; this year's second foal, another filly, is by Lanwades sire SIR PERCY. This filly is very closely related to 2012 Group winner ALLA SPERANZA (by SIR PERCY, out of ALVARITA). A third mare from the ALRUCCABA family who has foaled already is ALBACOCCA. A winner herself, and one of three winners out of ALRUCCABA’s NINISKI daughter BALLYMAC GIRL, ALBACOCCA has a grey first foal daughter by ARCHIPENKO and stays at Lanwades to be covered by AUSSIE RULES.
ALBACOCCA is one of six daughters of the excellent broodmare sire WITH APPROVAL in the Lanwades broodmare band and two of the others have also foaled already, each with a first foal and each with a colt by a Lanwades stallion. MEDAILLE D'OR, a dual winner herself at three in 2011 and one of 11 winners out of the Group 2 stakes winning NIJINSKY mare CROCKADORE, has a colt by AUSSIE RULES and visits ARCHIPENKO. MEMORY LANE, also a dual winner at three in 2011, has a bay colt by ARCHIPENKO.
The first arrival of 2013 was not actually at Lanwades but in Kentucky where SELKIRK's stakes winning daughter KISWAHILI produced a chesnut colt by STORMY ATLANTIC, the foal being a full brother to two-year-old Stakes Winner KINETICA. KISWAHILI’s own Lanwades-bred stakes winning daughter KINETICA retires to the Lanwades broodmare band this year, visiting CAPE CROSS. KISWAHILI meanwhile remains in Kentucky to be covered by ARCHIPENKO's close relative, Breeders' Cup Classic winner BLAME.
KISWAHILI is one of two descendants of the great taproot mare SPECIAL amongst the Lanwades early foalers for 2013, HERE TO ETERNITY, a winning STORMY ATLANTIC daughter of German Stakes winner HEAT OF THE NIGHT, has a chesnut colt by ARCHIPENKO, to whom she returns.
Also returning to ARCHIPENKO after producing a colt by him (this time a bay) is OBLIGE, whose only runner to date, the HERNANDO colt HERRBUGA, was a winner in Deauville last year at three and fourth in Listed company in Paris. OBLIGE’s ARCHIPENKO now two-year-old made €57,000 last year and is in training with David Simcock.
The same trainer also handles GLASS OFFICE, a Group winner at two last year out of OVAL OFFICE, a Lanwades acquisition from the Bloomsbury Stud dispersal. OVAL OFFICE recently foaled an AUSSIE RULES filly and visits ARCHIPENKO. Her Lanwades-bred two-year-old colt by HERNANDO is another in training with David Simcock after topping the 2012 Goffs Sportsmans Sale at €75,000.
The final two arrivals amongst the January foals are the boarders MIDNIGHT FANTASY and SANTA AGATA. Chris Mills' MIDNIGHT FANTASY, an OASIS DREAM 3-time winning half-sister to Group 3 winner MISS ANABAA, has a second foal filly this time by EQUIANO, a second filly following last year's daughter of ACCLAMATION. SANTA AGATA, British Bloodstock Agency owned, and a stakes placed ANABAA mare from the family of top Australian sires FLYING SPUR and ENCOSTA DE LAGO, has a first foal colt by MAKFI and visits another Australian horse in EXCEED AND EXCEL.

Less than two weeks after his death at age 25, SELKIRK has featured prominently in the 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings thanks to his son CITYSCAPE, whose Dubai Duty Free success on Dubai World Cup night helped him to a mark of 124, which makes him the third best miler in Europe in 2012 behind "greatest horse ever" FRANKEL and multiple Group 1 winning miler EXCELEBRATION.
Also representing SELKIRK on the list of best horses worldwide are his dual Gr.1 winning daughter NAHRAIN (116) and the progressive AIKEN (113), who races for George Strawbridge, in whose colours SELKIRK enjoyed such a successful racetrack career.
Other Lanwades retiree HERNANDO figured on the rankings too through his Group-winning sons ALIANTHUS (whose 2012 success brought his tally of Group wins to eight) and Gr.3 winner HARRIS TWEED both on a mark of 115, while Lanwades-bred ALBION represented both his sire WITH APPROVAL (who stood at Lanwades from 2006 to 2010) and his dam, Lanwades-bred World Champion race filly ALBORADA for a rating of 110.

SELKIRK, 1988 - 2013
Champion racehorse and sire SELKIRK (Sharpen Up – Annie Edge, by Nebbiolo) departed this life on 3rd January, two days after his official 25th birthday, due to old age.
SELKIRK, bred and owned by George Strawbridge, Jr, stood his entire stud career at Kirsten Rausing’s Lanwades Stud in Newmarket.
Trained by Ian Balding, SELKIRK was the winner of 6 races at 2, 3 and 4 years, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr.1) as well as the Celebration Mile, Challenge Stakes and Lockinge Stakes (all Gr.2). He was the European Champion 3 and 4 year old Miler in 1991 – 92 prior to becoming the Joint Champion First-Season Sire of Europe in 1997 and the leading British-based sire of 2002. He achieved these distinctions without ever covering more than 100 mares in any one season.
To date, SELKIRK has sired the winners of well over 1,500 races (worldwide) and approximately £35 million, including 90 individual Stakes Winners, 45 Group Winners and 15 individual Group One winners, the most recent being NAHRAIN and CITYSCAPE, both in 2012.
SELKIRK, who is also emerging as a very notable broodmare sire, will have a final small crop of yearlings representing him this year.
I feel immensely privileged to have had SELKIRK standing at Lanwades throughout his stud career. He was a wonderfully kind and co-operative character. We will greatly miss him, but his memory will live on, not only here at the stud, but throughout the Thoroughbred industry in this country and abroad” said Kirsten Rausing of the horse she knew for 21 years.
