Breeder of the year
"It took something very special indeed to outdo Jim Bolger’s remarkable achievement of breeding, owning and training the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas winners Poetic Flare and Mac Swiney from stallions he trained and maternal families he has long nurtured, but Kirsten Rausing edges it for us thanks to a simply extraordinary year of success.

Her distinctive white and green silks were carried by Alpinista, who emulated her granddam Albanova’s feat of winning three German Group 1s in a season, Albaflora, who ran second in the Yorkshire Oaks and British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, and Aleas, who scored in the Glasgow Stakes – all three descended from her influential broodmare Alouette. Rausing also bred and owned Sandrine, successful in the Albany and Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, Oriental Mystique, who struck at Listed level in France and was twice Group 3-placed, and Alerta Roja, another descendant of Alouette who ran second in the Doncaster Cup. Kirsten Rausing, here with Study Of Man, enjoyed a superb year as a breeder Kirsten Rausing, here with Study Of Man, enjoyed a superb year as a breeder Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos)

Moreover, Rausing bred and sold Zaaki, who has become the darling of Australian racing following his three Group 1 victories there, and several more classy performers closer to home such as Harrovian and Pondus. It looks set to be another big year for Rausing in 2022, as her two-year-old homebreds were to the fore in the past season, with Kawida taking the Montrose Fillies’ Stakes and the unexposed Allada, Ching Shih and Heat Of The Moment also bearing her colours to victory. One of the most exciting back-end maiden winners of the year, Eldar Eldarov, trained by Roger Varian for KHK Racing, was another bred by her. All that, and many of the above-named horses are by stallions she stands or stood at her Lanwades Stud in Newmarket."

ANOTHER LANWADES GROUP 1 DOUBLE
Lanwades celebrated a very special weekend again when ZAAKI added a third Group 1 success to his name when winning the Gr.1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. Bred by Lanwades, ZAAKI was purchased at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in 2020 to be sent to Australia to be trained by Annabel Neasham and has been an absolute sensation out there. He is by the late Lanwades stallion LEROIDESANIMAUX, sire of Kentucky Derby winner, ANIMAL KINGDOM, has now raced eight times in Australia and has won six of them, all at Group level. ZAAKI has now won over £2.1 million in prize money.

ALPINISTA capped off an amazing weekend for Lanwades with her third successful trip to Germany for a Group 1, this time winning the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich. A NEW STAKES WINNER FOR SIR PERCY
Lanwades-bred two-year-old KAWIDA is a new Stakes winner for her sire SIR PERCY when just getting up on the line to take the Listed Montrose Fillies’ Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Richard Frisby, Lanwades’ Racing Manager reported that "Tom Marquand felt two and a half furlongs out he was going to win by three lengths but KAWIDA takes a while to get organised. She's closely related to ZAAKI, who's done so well in Australia, so she's a valuable filly now. She's an exciting filly for the future and she stays very well". KAWIDA is now a dual winner and twice runner-up from her four starts.

LANWADES GROUP 1 DOUBLE

Lanwades celebrated a very special weekend when ZAAKI added a second Group 1 success in the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes at Sandown to extend his unbeaten run in Australia to five.  Bred by Lanwades, ZAAKI was purchased at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in 2020 by Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock on behalf of British-born trainer Annabel Neasham.  Winner of two Group 3 races when trained by Sir Michael Stoute in England, the now six-year-old gelding is by the late Lanwades' stallion LEROIDESANIMAUX, sire of Kentucky Derby winner ANIMAL KINGDOM, has raced seven times in Australia and has won five of these, all at Group level.

ALPINISTA made it a glorious weekend for Lanwades with her second successful trip to Germany for a Group 1, this time winning the Gr.1 Preis von Europa at Cologne.  This was ALPINISTA's second Group 1 success after winning the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten last month.  ALPINISTA is the first foal out of ALWILDA who also earned black-type when winning a Listed race in Cologne.  ALPINISTA's granddam is ALBANOVA winner of three Group 1 races in Germany including the Gr.1 Preis von Europa which of course is the race her granddaughter, ALPINISTA, won at the weekend.

AUSTRALIA RESULTS
ZAAKI’s win in the Group 2 Q22 at Eagle Farm on Saturday 12 June not only brought up a hat-trick of Group successes for the son of LEROIDESANIMAUX, but also highlighted the phenomenal strike-rate achieved by Lanwades-bred runners in Australia over the past two seasons.

The win in the 2,200 metre (mile and three furlongs) contest followed his runaway seven-length score in the time-honoured Group 1 Doomben Cup three weeks previously. His record in five starts in Australia, all since April, reads: close-up sixth of 19 in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile; a head second in a Group 3 handicap over 2,000 metres; and consecutive Group wins over the metric equivalents of nine, ten and eleven furlongs.

ZAAKI is the second Lanwades-bred son of LEROIDESANIMAUX to have scored in stakes company in Australia in the past month or so following the Listed Warrnambool Cup win in early May of LE DON DE VIE, a well-earned first success down under following his photo-finish Group 3 Geelong Cup second on his Australian debut last October. That was the second Listed Cup win in May for a Lanwades-bred after ARCHIPENKO four-year-old WYCLIF had taken out the Port Adelaide Cup over a similar mile and a half trip on the first day of the month.

Two other Lanwades-bred sons of ARCHIPENKO to have shone down under recently are MY NORDIC HERO, a Listed winner in Ireland when racing as ALGONQUIN and a Group 3 winner over an extended mile in Sydney and LORD BELVEDERE, winner of three consecutive races at Flemington in 2020.

LORD BELVEDERE’s SEA THE MOON half-brother PONDUS was second in Group 3 company on both his outings in Melbourne towards the backend of 2020 and is being pointed for big races at the spring festival in Victoria again this year.

With this quintet being the only Lanwades-breds to have run in Australia in this period, and with PONDUS, the only non-winner amongst them, finishing second in Group company on his only two outings, that is some strike-rate and some success story.

Lanwades continuously offers yearlings and an occasional horse in training which might well be suitable for racing in Australia. Please check our offerings on our page SALES.

FINAL FOALS
The final foals of 2021 have arrived at Lanwades, the last seven to hit the ground made up of five by three different Lanwades sires and two fillies by the excellent OASIS DREAM from the ALRUCCABA family.

SIR PERCY’s Group 3 juvenile-winning daughter ALLA SPERANZA has a bay OASIS DREAM full-sister to SHINE SO BRIGHT, winner at three of the Gr.2 City of York Stakes, having placed that level as a two-year-old in the Gimcrack, Mill Reef and Richmond Stakes. He was his dam’s first runner after her previous two colts died without racing, and he has been joined by a second winner this year in AMBOSELI, ALLA SPERANZA’s three-year-old KINGMAN daughter who won on her debut in France. The mare also has a two-year-old SEA THE STARS filly named ATLANTIS, in training with John Gosden, and a MUHAARAR yearling filly.

She will now visit STUDY OF MAN, as will her close relative ALBARAKA (a daughter of World Champion ALBORADA, who is also granddam of ALLA SPERANZA) who has foaled a grey filly by OASIS DREAM. This filly is also full-sister to a talented runner, in her case OASIS CHARM, ALBARAKA’s first foal, who achieved a Timeform mark of 118 after winning three of his first seven starts in the UK before being sent to the UAE, where he is a winner and still in training. ALBARAKA has the GOLDEN HORN three-year-old ALERTA ROJA to race for her this year and a yearling filly by SEA THE STARS to come.

MADAME CHIANG and AKSAYA both return to STUDY OF MAN after foaling first crop fillies by him. Group 1 British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes winner MADAME CHIANG has already had progeny on the board in Stakes company this year with her daughter ORIENTAL MYSTIQUE’s (Group 2 placed (2nd) in France last year)  seasonal debut third placing in the Listed Daisy Warwick Stakes at Goodwood and is due to run in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock tomorrow, while she also has three-year-old daughter RHANI OF JHANSI and two-year-old daughter CHING SHIH both in training with MADAME CHIANG and ORIENTAL MYSTIQUE’s handler David Simcock. The mare also has a yearling colt by GALILEO.

AKSAYA, a beautifully-bred daughter of SEA THE STARS and HERNANDO’S Group 3 winning and Group 1 placed daughter AKDARENA, did not race herself and is yet to have a runner, but she has three-year-old gelding with Ed Walker FOREVER GLORIOUS (ARCHIPENKO) and two-year-old filly AKSATIYA (BOBBY’S KITTEN) to run for her this year and a yearling filly by HAWKBILL.

MEMORY LANE, a fourth-generation Lanwades-bred (by WITH APPROVAL out of MISS PRISM by NINISKI) whose six-year-old PICCOLO son VERHOYEN continues to run well in Ireland, his latest victory came just last Saturday at The Curragh, has a chesnut filly by BOBBY’S KITTEN and now visits SIR PERCY.  MARIA DI SCOZIA, a third-generation Lanwades resident by SELKIRK out of a HERNANDO daughter of Italian Horse of the Year MARIA WALESKA, has a chesnut colt by SIR PERCY.

Finally, and fittingly, the only May foal born at Lanwades in 2021 is a bay colt by STUDY OF MAN out of STARLIT SANDS.  A granddaughter of Lanwades foundation mare SUSHILA. STARLIT SANDS has bred five winners to date and has three-year-old SANDS OF TIME (Mark Johnston) and two-year-old SABLONNE (Jessica Harrington) to run in Europe for her this year, along with her four-year-old son SIDEREAL, now in training in Australia.

A NEW GROUP 1 WINNER BRED BY LANWADES
Lanwades-bred ZAAKI was a most impressive winner of the Gr.1 Doomben Cup over 2000 m (10 furlongs) in Australia at the weekend. The six-year-old son of the late Lanwades sire LEROIDESANIMAUX was always in touch and took the lead as they turned in the home straight and went on to an easy victory by some seven lengths. He had previously won the Gr.2 A D Hollindale Stakes. Previous to this when in training in England with Sir Michael Stoute he had won the Gr.3 Strensall Stakes, the Gr.3 Diomed Stakes and the Listed Paradise Stakes. He is out of KESARA who is now dam of 6 winners and has 3 daughters at Lanwades (APPARATCHIKA, KANDAHARI and KESARINA) plus a yearling filly by BOBBYS KITTEN.

HERE SHE IS
Highlight amongst recent arrivals at Lanwades has to be the DUBAWI half-sister to Group 1 winners TIME WARP and GLORIOUS FOREVER, the Hong Kong-based full-brothers by ARCHIPENKO who between them boast 18 wins, including four Group 1 wins, and earnings of over £6 million. HERE TO ETERNITY, dam of the trio, has a GALILEO yearling colt to represent her yet and stays at home to year to visit STUDY OF MAN. Within days of the DUBAWI filly’s arrival HERE TO ETERNITY’s unraced LEROIDESANIMAUX daughter HEATWAVE, produced her first foal, a bay filly by HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR; she too stays at home, to be covered by SEA THE MOON.

Around the same time, four new foals by our exciting SEA THE STARS horse SEA THE MOON arrived at Lanwades. SELENOGRAPHY’s filly foal is a full-sister to TRITONIC, a winner at two, stakes-placed at three and amongst this year’s leading juvenile hurdlers at four; NIMIETY’s colt is also half-brother to an exciting runner for 2021 in NEBULOSA, an ARCHIPENKO filly who was a decisive winner of a Newmarket maiden on her final start at two last year; NA BALADA, a Brazilian Group 2 winner out of a half-sister to 1000 Guineas winner NATAGORA, has a filly second foal, while KANDAHARI, a dual-winning ARCHIPENKO mare, has had her third filly from as many foals after daughters in 2019 and 2020 by SIR PERCY. That horse will now be the 2021 mate for SELENOGRAPHY, while the other three mares will all visit STUDY OF MAN.

Two other mares visiting STUDY OF MAN this year are a pair with long Lanwades connections, KINETICA and MARIEE. The former, a granddaughter of Oaks Trial winner KILINISKI (herself a granddaughter of the great SPECIAL) a Group-placed Listed winner herself and dam of three winners with her only three foals to race, has a KENDARGENT filly at foot; MARIEE, also with a foal at foot by a superior French runner, in her case Champion two-year-old NATIONAL DEFENSE, continues a great family tradition of visiting Lanwades sires – she is a dual-winning ARCHIPENKO mare out of a dual-winning SELKIRK mare whose dam is a HERNANDO daughter of Italian Horse of the Year 1979 and long-time Lanwades resident MARIA WALESKA. SIR PERCY is sire of the youngest of the recent arrivals, a bay filly out of AKRANTI, an unraced PIVOTAL daughter of HERNANDO’s Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes winner AKDARENA, whose ARCHIPENKO son ARCHDEACON is a recent winner in Italy.

STUDIES OF MAN
Three mares who feature as dams of multiple winners already in 2021 are amongst more than a dozen who have foaled recently to STUDY OF MAN our new Prix du Jockey Club winning son of DEEP IMPACT.

CARIBENO won five races in a row from January through March and he now has a STUDY OF MAN half-sister; their dam CUBANITA, a dual Group 3 winner and Group 1 runner-up by SELKIRK, now visits SEA THE MOON. ALRUCCABA ARRIVALS
A number of ALRUCCABA family members have foaled in February and March, no less than five of them producing arrivals by Lanwades new boy STUDY OF MAN.

Amongst them was Listed winner ALMA MATER, whose bay colt is half-brother to five multiple winners including the useful ALUMNA and HARROVIAN, his dam’s first five foals. The mare’s sixth living foal, the as yet unraced three-year-old ARCHIPENKO filly ALAGAPPA, is in training with Sir Mark Prescott, while her seventh is a yearling colt by leading French sire KENDARGENT. That horse features as sire of the first foal grey colt for ALMA MATER’s six-time winning ANIMAL KINGDOM daughter ALTRA VITA, while another of ALMA MATER’s daughters, Group 1 placed ALUMNA, has a BOBBY’S KITTEN half-brother to dual winner ALPHA THETA, a daughter of ARCHIPENKO trained by Mark Johnston. Both ALUMNA and ALTRA VITA now visit STUDY OF MAN.

Three-time Listed winner ALL AT SEA, one of four Group or Listed winners out of German Horse of the year ALBANOVA, has a STUDY OF MAN bay daughter. The filly is half-sister to A LA VOILE, a three-time winner at three last year for Sir Michael Stoute from just five starts to date, while her dam has a two-year-old colt by DUBAWI (in Arqana May Breeze-Up Sales) and a yearling colt by ill-fated ROARING LION to come.

All three of the other mares with STUDY OF MAN foals will remain at Lanwades, visiting three different stallions. Group 3 winner ALEA IACTA, whose first two foals, multiple winners ANIMAL INSTINCT and ALEAS are respectively by Lanwades sires LEROIDESANIMAUX and ARCHIPENKO, has a bay colt and will now go to SEA THE MOON, sire of her 2021 two-year-old ALIZARINE, who is with Jessica Harrington. OTHER EARLY ARRIVALS
DAME FREYA STARK, whose dam LADY JANE DIGBY was responsible for the first Lanwades-born STUDY OF MAN foal, got in amongst the early action with a January-foaled bay daughter of SEA THE MOON who was the very first arrival at Lanwades for 2021. A fourth generation Lanwades-bred and by the late Lanwades-based sire in LEROIDESANIMAUX, she will stay put for this year, visiting STUDY OF MAN.

Also, due to go to STUDY OF MAN this year, having both foaled already to BOBBY’S KITTEN, are ARCHDUCHESS and LUISA CALDERON. The former, a winning ARCHIPENKO granddaughter of Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille winner MY EMMA, has a chesnut filly half-sister to SEA THE MOON’s Timeform 95 rated 2020 three-year-old winning son ARCH MOON; LUISA CALDERON, an unraced own-sister to German Champion and Prix de l’Opera winner LADY MARIAN, has a bay full-brother to her 2020 two-year-old winning son DERON KIT.

A fourth-generation Lanwades-bred, by LEROIDESANIMAUX out of a SELKIRK mare out of a HERNANDO mare, she is exception amongst this trio in that she will visit not SEA THE MOON, like the other two, but SIR PERCY.

The two who will visit SEA THE MOON now are ALMA LINDA, a dual-winning half-sister to two black-type winners and granddaughter of World Champion ALBORADA, who has a bay or grey filly by SEA THE STARS, and AKVAVERA, a three-time winner by LEROIDESANIMAUX out of HERNANDO’s Group-1 placed Group 3 winner AKDARENA, whose first progeny is a chesnut colt by MASTERCRAFTSMAN.

STUDY OF MAN ARRIVALS
The first foals by our new DEEP IMPACT horse STUDY OF MAN have arrived, an extremely pleasing bunch of five on the ground by the second week of February, all of them bay, and with three of their five dams returning to the horse straightaway.

First on the ground, and the only January foal amongst them, is a filly out of third-generation Lanwades Group 1 winner LADY JANE DIGBY. Her first five foals are all winners, and she has a two-year-old filly by CHURCHILL, MADAME AMBASSADOR, in training with Mark Johnston to run for her this year. She now visits Lanwades’ current headline horse SEA THE MOON. LADY JANE DIGBY’s winning three-parts sister DIABLERETTE also has a STUDY OF MAN foal, hers a colt half-brother to four winners including PONDUS, SEA THE MOON’S 2020 Irish Listed winning son last seen when second in a Group 3 race at the Melbourne Cup carnival in November.

Another successful Stakes producer with a STUDY OF MAN filly (her seventh filly from eight foals) is ALMIRANTA, a daughter of GALILEO from the ALRUCCABA family. A non—winner herself, ALMIRANTA has produced four black type horses from her first four surviving foals: SIR PERCY’s Group 2 winning daughter ALYSSA; Group 3 winner ALEA IACTA and Listed winner ALOE VERA: and the 2020 Group 3 Musidora Stakes runner-up ALBAFLORA. That filly stays in training with Ralph Beckett while her dam also has filly runners in 2021 in ALAMBRISTA, a BOBBYS KITTEN three-year-old with Sir Mark Prescott, and ALLEMANDE, a daughter of SEA THE MOON also with Ralph Beckett.

Two younger mares complete the quintet with STUDY OF MAN foals, both with colts. KINAESTHESIA, a fourth-generation Lanwades-bred tracing to SPECIAL through MADAME CHIANG’s granddam KILINISKI, has a second colt in as many foals by a son of DEEP IMPACT following last year’s first foal colt by SAXON WARRIOR. QUINTADA meanwhile, a three-time winner by LEROIDESANIMAUX out of Italian Group 1 winner QUIZA QUIZA QUIZA, has a first foal colt and is the third of the mares returning to STUDY OF MAN.
